International Youth Day As a young man growing up in Los Angeles, I learned early that our circumstances do not define our potential. My mother worked tirelessly to earn two master’s degrees while raising four children, showing me that education could open doors that once seemed out of reach.<\/span><\/p>\n Years later, when a football injury ended the future I had imagined for myself, I was forced to find a new path. Looking back, I realize that opportunity often begins when someone believes in your ability to grow beyond your circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n That lesson has stayed with me throughout my life.<\/p>\n Wherever I travel, I ask young people a simple question: <\/span>What do you hope for?<\/span><\/i> The answers rarely differ. A young entrepreneur in South Sudan wants to build a business that supports her family. A student in France hopes to find meaningful work and contribute to her community. A young leader in Mexico wants to create opportunities for others. A teenager in Los Angeles wants to know their voice matters.<\/span><\/p>\n Their circumstances are different. Their aspirations are not.<\/strong><\/p>\n This year’s International Youth Day theme, \u00ab\u00a0Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,\u00a0\u00bb reminds us of a simple but powerful truth: while geography, conflict, inequality, and climate change shape young people’s lives in different ways, their hopes transcend borders. They seek dignity, opportunity, quality education, meaningful work, and the chance to build lives defined not by the challenges they inherited, but by the futures they create.<\/span><\/p>\n Too often, we define young people by what they lack. We speak about unemployment, conflict, displacement, poverty, or unequal access to education and technology. These challenges are real, and for many young people, especially those living in the world’s most vulnerable communities, they remain significant barriers. But focusing only on obstacles risks overlooking something equally important.<\/span><\/p>\n Young people are not waiting to be saved. They are already leading.<\/strong><\/p>\n Through WPDI, I have watched young people launch businesses, mediate conflicts, mentor their peers, embrace technology, and strengthen their communities. Again and again, they remind me that leadership is not determined by age or circumstance. It begins with opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n When young people are given the chance to learn, lead, and contribute, the impact extends far beyond individual success. Stronger businesses create stronger local economies. Young leaders strengthen trust within their communities. New ideas inspire others to believe that change is possible. The ripple effects reach families, neighborhoods, and future generations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n That is why investing in young people is not only the right thing to do; it is one of the most important investments we can make in our shared future.<\/strong> The challenges facing today’s generation do not stop at borders, and neither should our commitment to supporting them. By expanding access to opportunity, we help ensure that young people everywhere can turn their aspirations into lasting change.<\/span><\/p>\n
