April 22, 2019\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 Among nature\u2019s many gifts to our planet are the millions of species and incredible ecosystems that we know and love. Unfortunately, due to unprecedented global challenges including climate change and the rapid reduction of plant and wildlife populations, the world is facing the greatest rate of extinction in more than 60 million years. Unless we act, this could have real, tangible impacts for all of us. Today, on Earth Day, we invited three of our aspiring youth peacemakers in Mexico\u2019s Chiapas state to share their thoughts about the importance of preserving and protecting nature.<\/p>\n

\"Ruddy<\/p>\n

Ruddy Perez Diaz<\/u>\u00a0(26-years-old)
\n\u201cTo me, nature is life. What I value most in this world are the flora and fauna. My community is a wonderful place full of natural resources, with springs and lagoons. Unfortunately, some people in my community cut down trees to allow livestock to graze. These practices are destroying our natural resources. In response, I have facilitated workshops about the importance of trees in our community.<\/p>\n

I want to tell young people that we need to rescue nature if we want to avoid the suffering of future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Adelaida Bolom Gomez\u00a0<\/u>(25-years-old)
\n\u201cHuman life is not possible without the environment. It is important to coexist, respectfully, with nature and other living beings. The natural environment is sacred to me. I was born and raised in the Lacandona jungle. Sometimes, I feel helpless when I see the loss of vegetation in large quantities. I would like everybody to understand how valuable natural resources are in appreciating life, peace, well-being, health, and food.<\/p>\n

I work to re-forest degraded areas. I am also helping my community promote recycling. I think it is time to recognize nature\u2019s intrinsic value. I invite other young people to respect Mother Earth. Together, we can build a network based on respect for nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIf nature feels good, I feel good. My personal development is linked to nature. It is a place where I can build my personality, learn, and be connected to my Gods. It strengthens my spirit. Through the sounds of nature, I find shelter and peace in my heart.<\/p>\n

Having nature around is a privilege. Nature shouldn\u2019t be sold. All living things are part of nature. Where I live, there are species in danger of becoming extinct, like jaguars, macaws, tapirs, and others. Mankind\u2019s materialistic approach has put these all at risk. It is imperative that we find new alternatives in order to preserve life. It is essential that we young people build a future based on a peaceful culture. We need to live in harmony with nature and be responsible for our actions.
