September 14, 2023 – <\/b>In spring 2023, WPDI conducted a Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding training program for women from across the Cape Flats area, South Africa, in the framework of the City of Cape Town\u2019s <\/span>\u201cWomen for Change<\/span><\/a>\u201d program. These areas are not geographically close to each other, yet they share so many of the same socio-economic issues. These communities, like many others in the Cape Flats, are known for high unemployment, high levels of gang violence and other violent crimes that have a direct, negative impact on local communities. The Social and Early Childhood Development department at the City of Cape Town was keen to team up with WPDI and develop a program for women, in order to build their capacity as mediators and peacemakers in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The program seeks to help women play a more meaningful and active role in their local communities whilst developing at a personal level and learning new skills. They are also given new job opportunities, through a temporary employment scheme that sees them join various local community-based organizations to gain valuable experience. The Conflict Resolution Education component, run by WPDI as part of the City of Cape Town\u2019s initiative, aimed to empower the women with the necessary tools to help them resolve conflicts in their communities and the organizations in which they were placed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

From April to June, a total of 160 people between the ages of 22 and 59 were trained. The sessions were interactive and trainees were enthusiastic and eager to participate. The goal was to help the trainees understand the importance of peace and why it is important for them to play an active role in their communities. At the end of the program, trainees shared their views on what they had learned. They almost unanimously affirmed that they were looking forward to implementing their new skills and work towards making a positive impact in their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs an active community leader, this training has given me essential tools to be a better and more peaceful leader. This training gave me the tools necessary to resolve conflicts in my community but also my daily life. I am leaving this training with so much hope for my community and the Cape Flats. The work of WPDI is already and will continue to transform many lives in the Cape Flats,\u201d<\/span><\/i> said Patricia, a trainee.<\/span><\/p>\n

In communities like the Cape Flats, accessing programs like this can be transformational. Peace is something that we often take for granted, but in such communities, helping people heal and find a sustainable way to implement peace and improve their lives can be a rare opportunity. At WPDI, we are convinced that our approach works, and feedback from community members who have participated in our programs attests to this.<\/span><\/p>\n
