July 23, 2026 – Every child deserves a safe space to reflect, ask questions, and imagine a more peaceful future. Kicking off the summer season, WPDI South Africa brought its Cinema for Peace program to Prince George Primary School in Lavender Hill, engaging 183 students in an interactive experience that used film as a catalyst for dialogue about empathy and peacebuilding.
More than a movie screening, the event created an environment where learners could openly discuss the realities they face in their communities while exploring the values of respect, non-violence, and positive decision-making.
Following the screening, a conversation led by one of our Youth Peacemakers encouraged students to reflect on how their daily choices affect others and how they can contribute to creating safer, more inclusive schools. Students actively shared their experiences, listened to one another, and explored practical ways to resolve conflict peacefully.

The discussions also reinforced the importance of empathy and active listening in building stronger relationships. « I enjoyed being able to share my thoughts after the movie. It made me feel heard and reminded me how important it is to listen to others when they are expressing their ideas. This activity helped us to understand each other better and reminded us that we all have the same challenges and want to make peace. » – Zahra, Grade 6
WPDI Youth Peacemaker Rancenzo De Jager highlighted the value of creating spaces where young people can critically examine the challenges around them while recognizing their own capacity to create change. « Cinema for Peace creates a powerful opportunity for learners to engage on important issues in a way that is relatable and interactive. As today’s learners begin discovering their own potential as peacemakers, Rancenzo’s journey offers a glimpse of what’s possible. After developing his leadership through WPDI’s Youth Peacemaker program, he was recently selected to travel to the United States this summer to work as a camp counselor, sharing the conflict resolution skills he first learned in his own community with youth from around the world.
Cinema for Peace is part of WPDI’s broader commitment to equipping young people with the skills to foster peaceful communities. By combining storytelling with guided dialogue, the program empowers learners to see themselves not only as participants in their communities but as active peacemakers capable of influencing those around them.
As conversations continued long after the credits rolled, the screening demonstrated that meaningful change often begins with a simple opportunity to listen, reflect, and choose peace.
