“Seeing so many of our learners graduate has been a proud moment for our school. Their growth in handling conflicts and engaging positively with peers reflects the bright direction our school is moving in. Thank you, WPDI, for your dedication to changing the lives of our learners.”
January 28, 2026 – In 2025, WPDI empowered more than 8,000 learners across the Cape Flats through its Peace Education Program, implemented in 40 schools, 26 primary and 14 secondary, reaching students aged 8 to 18. The program equips learners with skills in conflict resolution, empathy, and collaboration, while encouraging them to take active roles in fostering peace in their schools and communities.
From October to December, participating schools celebrated their learners’ achievements through graduation ceremonies. Each of these events were moments of pride, reflection, and inspiration. Learners showcased projects, artwork, and performances reflecting the values of peace and non-violence, and each graduate received a certificate of completion, symbolizing their commitment to promoting understanding and resolving conflict constructively.
The value of the program is in emphasizing peer mediation and peace clubs, giving students the tools and confidence to handle disagreements and create safer school environments. As one Grade 11 peace club member shared, “Being trained as a peer mediator has changed how I approach conflict. I now know how to listen, stay calm, and help others find peaceful solutions. I feel empowered to make a difference every day. The peace training has taught me that I can make a change in my school and community.”
The impact was visible across all levels. A Grade 6 learner reflected, “Peace is now our first priority. Participating in this program has empowered us to create a safer school environment. We are the hope for our families and communities. Let’s continue to encourage each other and listen to others.”
It was telling that school leaders also noted the transformation: “Seeing so many of our learners graduate has been a proud moment for our school. Their growth in handling conflicts and engaging positively with peers reflects the bright direction our school is moving in. Thank you, WPDI, for your dedication to changing the lives of our learners.” – Mrs. Rabani, Principal, Prince George Primary

The South Africa Peace Education program in 2025 reached some 5,000 primary school learners and 3,000 secondary school learners, including peer mediators and peace club members. Beyond South Africa, WPDI’s peace education in school program is just one part of a global initiative spanning six countries, grounded in the values of empathy and understanding. This cross-cultural approach allows students to feel part of a larger global movement for peace.
Supported by our longstanding partners, BNP Paribas and RCS Group, WPDI’s Peace Education Program demonstrates that empowering youth with conflict resolution skills and leadership opportunities strengthens schools, communities, and a growing global network of peacemakers, showing that lasting peace begins with young leaders.
