July 9, 2026 – Fifteen years ago, the people of South Sudan celebrated the birth of a new nation with hope for a future built on freedom, dignity, and opportunity. To this day, South Sudan remains the youngest country in the world.
As South Sudan marks its 15th Independence Day, WPDI joins communities across the country in celebrating this important milestone. South Sudan was one of the first countries where WPDI began its work, and for more than a decade, we have had the privilege of standing alongside South Sudanese communities as partners in building peace, expanding opportunity, and strengthening resilience.
The journey has not been easy. South Sudan continues to navigate the challenges of conflict, displacement, economic hardship, climate shocks, food insecurity, and the impacts of regional instability. Yet throughout these challenges, we have witnessed the remarkable resilience, leadership, and determination of the South Sudanese people.
Time and again, communities have chosen dialogue over division, collaboration over conflict, and hope over despair.

Together with youth, educators, women entrepreneurs, local leaders, and partners, we have seen that lasting peace is built through education, leadership, economic opportunity, and trust. Every day, South Sudanese peacebuilders are strengthening their communities for generations to come.
We especially want to recognize our WPDI South Sudan team, whose commitment, together with the community leaders and local partners they work alongside every day, continues to inspire hope.
As we commemorate 15 years of independence, we remain committed to standing alongside the people of South Sudan as they continue building a more peaceful, resilient, and prosperous future.
Happy 15th Independence Day, South Sudan!
