October 13, 2025 – This past August, WPDI, in collaboration with Gemini Africa Enterprises and the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement, conducted a four-day workshop for the Terekeka County Legislative Council. The training brought together 35 participants, including legislative council members, county executive officials, and representatives from the Ministry of Local Government and law enforcement agencies, to equip them to advance peace, good governance, and development in their communities.

The workshop focused on building participants’ understanding of conflict resolution, servant leadership, human rights, and the role of legislative councils in fostering peace and stability. Topics covered in the training included conflict analysis, power dynamics, the concept of peace, the Local Government Act of 2009, and the responsibilities of council members in enhancing community representation and oversight. By engaging in interactive sessions, participants enhanced their skills and knowledge, preparing them to address challenges facing Terekeka County with renewed confidence and capacity.

Voices from the Training:

Canon Martin Simon, Director General of the Central Equatoria State Ministry of Local Government and Law Enforcement, officially opened the workshop. He emphasized the need for collaboration and active participation, urging attendees to apply their knowledge to promote peace and set an example for other counties across South Sudan. Feedback from participants highlighted the clarity, relevance, and effectiveness of the training, with more than 95% affirming that the objectives were met and over 85% praising the facilitators’ expertise and preparation. Participants also reported that engagement and participation were strongly encouraged.

Asunta Paul, Chairlady of the Terekeka Women’s Association, reflected:

“Before this training, we were unaware of our rights and responsibilities. It was painful to realize our potential. The training has enabled us to understand our roles within the community and the legislative process. We now know how to facilitate peace and development. We request that such training continue regularly to bring about positive change in our nation.”

Hon Joseph Elia, Chairperson of the Terekeka County Legislative Council, expressed his appreciation:

“We appreciate WPDI for organizing this workshop. Councilors and Executive members of Terekeka have now understood their different roles and key concepts in good governance, peacebuilding, the Local Government Act 2009, human rights, and conflict resolution. I hope WPDI will extend the training to other counties to benefit from this important training.”

Emmanuel Remot, Acting Executive Director, stressed accountability:

“Having laws is not enough; we must enforce and implement them effectively. I commend WPDI for its dedication and encourage continued support. We propose extending the training to seven days and conducting sessions twice a month, expanding to include more community members, youth, chiefs, and stakeholders. Let us disseminate messages of peace, unity, and development to build a stronger Terekeka. WPDI’s support is vital, please do not leave us alone.”

A Step Toward Sustainable Development
By the end of the four days, participants not only deepened their understanding of governance and conflict resolution but also built stronger connections with one another, laying the foundation for greater collaboration among leaders of the region in the future. The training highlighted the relevance of WPDI’s mission to foster long-term peace through the empowerment of local leaders, ensuring that positive transformation can take root in Terekeka and beyond.
