December 9, 2022 – This year, WPDI was pleased to install a state-of-the-art Cisco Edge center at our Community Learning Center in Gulu City, Uganda. The installation took place this summer, and includes modern communication and security equipment with a cloud-based control system based on Cisco’s Webex solution. Thanks to this new equipment, training sessions including Business and Entrepreneurship courses are more interactive due in part to the Webex smart board used in the classroom.
Our local trainers are really delighted with this new technology, which has transformed the classroom experience for trainees. Onen David said “As a trainer of Business skills and Entrepreneurship, the introduction of the smart board in our training center is very helpful. We can use it as a whiteboard, projector, or video conferencing system. This makes the work of trainer’s easier as well as delivering content to learning in an easy and smart way.”
For trainees, improving their access to modern technologies is crucial for their business skills and ability to navigate the modern, digitalized world. Apiyo Joyce, a trainee, said “I like the WPDI training center. They use smart equipment and access to the internet has been made so easy by the newly installed Cisco Webex equipment. From around the compound, one can access the internet through the outdoor Access Points. I enjoy taking my training from the WPDI Community Learning Center.”
For WPDI, developing the infrastructure in and around our Community Learning Centers is an important step in our strategy to foster lasting peace and sustainable development in communities whose capacity for resilience has been stifled by years, sometimes decades, of conflict. In such places, education and vocational training give individuals, many of whom have grown up in communities fraught with violence and instability, a real chance to create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Improving the technological infrastructure of our CLCs can only multiply the transformative power of education, nurturing the talent of individuals who will, in turn promote peace and stability leading to more secure and enabling environments for all.
